Beach Clean Up was held
Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Cates Park 10:00am to Noon
Another event sponsored by the N.V. Save Our Shores Society is the annual Beach Clean-Up from Cates Park to Panorama Park in Deep Cove. Volunteers are organized on the beach. The clean-up crew is supplied with bags and strategically-placed dumpsters. We ask that the volunteers bring gloves suitable for picking up garbage, sturdy footwear and if possible a bucket. The amount of refuse on the beach is noticeably declining so the message of SOS is obviously hitting the mark. Unfortunately however, enormous numbers of cigarette butts are collected which otherwise would remain in the environment for up to 10 years. Considerable amounts of broken glass is always found buried in the sand which is very dangerous to humans and pets. Surprisingly, garden refuse has also been found strewn along the beach. Unfortunately the pesticides and herbicides that are also found on these do not break down in the ocean that quickly.
